How to Prepare for Pest Control: A Homeowner Checklist

Joshua Culver · October 9, 2026 · Pest Control Tips

A practical preparation checklist that helps your pest-control appointment stay efficient, targeted, and safer for people and pets.

Southeast Texas home prepared for a professional pest-control visit

Knowing how to prepare for pest control starts with the company’s written instructions for your particular service. Clear safe access, document the pest evidence, protect exposed food as directed, and confirm arrangements for every pet before the technician arrives.

Before changing anything, document what you saw. A photograph of an insect, droppings, damage, bites, or the original location may be more useful than a spotless room with every clue removed.

Before the technician arrives

  1. Confirm the arrival window, treatment scope, price, and any required access.
  2. Ask whether anyone must leave and for how long; follow the product label and technician’s re-entry instructions.
  3. List every room or exterior area where activity was seen.
  4. Secure pets and tell the company about fish, birds, reptiles, small mammals, and sensitive individuals.
  5. Identify products you have already sprayed, dusted, fogged, baited, or placed.

Do not apply another product immediately before the visit unless the company instructs you to. Residues can hide evidence, interfere with baits, move pests, or create an avoidable exposure problem.

Kitchen and pantry preparation

  • Store exposed food, utensils, cutting boards, and pet dishes as directed
  • Remove trash and recycling; rinse residue from containers
  • Clean accessible crumbs and grease without erasing documented pest evidence
  • Provide access beneath sinks and around appliances when safe
  • Report leaks, condensation, loose tiles, and gaps around plumbing

Do not empty every cabinet automatically. Some services need targeted access; others do not. Excessive movement can spread roaches or bed bugs to clean areas. Follow the pest-specific instructions you receive.

Bedrooms and living areas

Pick up floor clutter so baseboards and furniture edges can be inspected. Move furniture only if instructed and only when it can be done safely. For suspected bed bugs, do not carry bedding, clothing, or furniture into another room because that can spread the infestation.

Wash or bag items only according to the treatment plan. Heat-sensitive, pressurized, flammable, medicinal, and valuable items may require special handling during bed-bug heat service.

Children, pets, and special situations

Tell the company about infants, pregnancy, asthma, chemical sensitivities, mobility limitations, aquariums, birds, reptiles, and any animal that cannot be easily moved. Ask for product names and the exact preparation and re-entry requirements.

The EPA cautions against broad claims that a pesticide is simply “safe.” Risk depends on the product, dose, exposure, and compliance with the label. A professional should communicate specific precautions instead of offering a blanket promise.

Exterior preparation

  • Unlock gates and remove obstacles from the foundation perimeter
  • Pick up pet waste, toys, hoses, and loose items
  • Trim only enough vegetation to provide safe access; ask before major cutting
  • Identify wells, ponds, drains, gardens, bee hives, and other sensitive areas
  • Close windows and secure pets according to instructions

If the appointment is for recurring household pests, review BugMan’s pest-control services. For mosquitoes, the mosquito-control page explains the yard-focused service.

Questions to ask after service

  1. What evidence did you find and where?
  2. What was treated, placed, sealed, or monitored?
  3. What must stay untouched and for how long?
  4. When can people and pets re-enter each area?
  5. What activity is normal after treatment, and what should trigger a call?
  6. What property conditions should I correct before follow-up?

Save the service record

Keep product, treatment, preparation, and follow-up information with your home records. This prevents conflicting DIY applications and helps future technicians understand the history.

Before the technician leaves

Before the technician leaves, you should understand what was found, where treatment or monitors were placed, what not to clean, when each area can be used again, what activity is expected, and when to call. Ask for the service record and save product information.

Homeowner work should be specific: repair the pipe under the kitchen sink, replace the garage-door corner seal, move firewood from the east foundation, or vacuum the sofa edges on the stated schedule. “Keep clean” is too vague to measure.

Check access to the areas being inspected

Walk the appointment areas and identify what could prevent inspection: a locked shed, a cabinet filled with fragile items, a heavy appliance, a crawl-space hatch behind storage, or a gate shared with a neighbor. Send those details to the company in advance. Ask which items actually need to move, how much access is needed, and who is expected to move them. Avoid lifting heavy equipment or entering hazardous areas yourself.

Choose one adult contact who can explain the sightings and receive the instructions. If someone else will meet the technician, leave them the room list, service history, and questions. Make sure they know which areas are authorized for access and which require contacting you first. A relative or property manager should not need to guess about a previous treatment or an animal kept in a separate room.

Frequently asked questions

Should I clean before pest control?

Clean routine food and clutter while preserving photographs or samples of pest evidence. Avoid deep cleaning treated surfaces after service until the technician explains what can be washed and when.

Do I need to move all furniture away from walls?

Only if the company instructs you to. The pest and treatment determine access needs, and moving heavy furniture can be unsafe or spread an infestation.

Can my pets stay home during treatment?

That depends on the animal, product, treatment area, and label. Disclose every pet and follow the technician’s specific removal and re-entry instructions.

What information should I give the exterminator?

Share the pest or evidence, exact locations, when activity occurs, recent building changes, pets and sensitive occupants, and every product or device already used.

Should I mop after pest control?

Ask which surfaces can be cleaned and when. Immediate washing can remove residual treatment, while food-contact areas may have separate instructions.

What if I cannot complete the preparation checklist?

Contact the company before arrival. The technician can decide whether the service can be modified, partially completed, or rescheduled safely.

Do exterior-only appointments require indoor preparation?

Usually less, but doors, windows, pets, toys, gates, water, gardens, and sensitive outdoor areas still need attention. Confirm whether indoor inspection is included.
